This past weekend, the OPA JAYS - Coleman squad took a bold leap forward in their baseball journey, moving up from the 14u Major level to compete in a high school tournament. The jump in competition didn’t intimidate them—in fact, it brought out the best in this talented group. The JAYS went 3-1 in the tournament, advancing all the way to the championship game where they fell just short in extra innings on a walk-off. While the loss stung, the experience proved invaluable and showcased the team’s resilience, skill, and potential.
What made the weekend even more special was the opportunity to perform in front of college coaches from East Texas Baptist University, Galveston Junior College, and the University of St. Thomas. After the games, players had the chance to speak directly with these coaches, receiving feedback and advice that will stay with them as they continue working toward the next level. Playing high school-level competition under the watchful eyes of college recruiters marked a major milestone for this young squad.
Over the course of the tournament, the JAYS posted impressive numbers on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they scored 24 runs and racked up 28 hits, consistently pressuring opposing pitchers with aggressive, disciplined at-bats. Defensively, the team was solid throughout, allowing just 13 runs over four games and showing poise in high-leverage situations.
Much of that defensive success came from the mound, where Aiden Nguyen, Jack Tatum, Jonny Oncale, and Brady Segura turned in stellar pitching performances. Each of them stepped up under pressure, attacking the zone and keeping hitters off balance with maturity beyond their years.
Aiden Nguyen, Brady Segura, and Jonny Oncale each turned in impressive pitching performances throughout the weekend, setting the tone on the mound and keeping opposing offenses in check. In the championship game, Brody Cooper came up big at the plate, swinging a hot bat and driving in crucial runs to keep the JAYS in contention. Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as all four were named Players of the Game for their standout contributions. Aiden was electric on the mound and made a strong impact offensively. Brady stepped up in key moments, showing heart and hustle on both sides of the ball. Jonny displayed leadership and poise under pressure, while Brody’s timely hits and energy helped shift momentum in the JAYS’ favor.
This tournament was about more than just wins and losses—it was about stepping up, facing a new level of challenge, and proving that the OPA JAYS - Coleman squad belongs on the big stage. The Flock did exactly that. We’re proud of their growth, their grit, and their ability to rise to the occasion. The future is bright, and this is only the beginning as the Flock begins to soar.
Great Day to be a JAY!
