Your Player's Next Four Years Start on November 18

Winter is when ballplayers are made

The games stop in the winter. The work doesn't.

The players who show up in March throwing harder, swinging with more intent and seeing the game faster didn't get there by accident. They spent the offseason around the right coaches, in the right building, with teammates who pushed them.

That's what the Flock is built for.

OPA JAYS Youth Tryouts start Wednesday, November 18 at the RAC in Waller and Friday, November 20 at OPA JAYS facility in Cypress, then continue on Mondays (11U & 12U) and Thursdays (9U, 10U, 13U & 14U) through December 17.

More than a team: a program with roots

The JAYS story started in the mid-1980s, when Robert and Leslie Lee began guiding Houston high schoolers toward college baseball. That group became the Houston JAYS and won a College Summer Baseball Association national title. In 2000 the program returned as the HBA JAYS and grew into one of Northwest Houston's premier organizations.

In 2021, Carson Lee, a Prairie View A&M alum who went on to play professionally, brought it back as the One Percent Academy JAYS. The idea is simple: get One Percent Better every day, on the field and off it. Our alumni list now includes more than 30 college players who have gone on to play College Baseball in the last 3 years.

Coaches who have played where your player wants to go

Your player learns from coaches who have lived and breathed it. Our staff includes former college and professional players, including:

  • Robie Rojas, hitting and catching coach: a former JAY who played at Oklahoma State, Blinn and Sam Houston State, then reached Triple-A with the Milwaukee Brewers.

  • Mark Cerny, a original JAY from the 80's, high school coach: University of Houston and the Cincinnati Reds organization.

  • Waskyla Cullivan, former Division 1 College Coach

  • Adam Coleman, former college catcher and outfielder. With over 10 years coaching experience, our Youth Director, who oversees the youth program and coaches 12U.

  • Gabe Memmert, 12 years of professional experience

  • Heidi Johnson of the Metal Chapter, on site strength and conditioning coach

  • Carson Lee, owner with Division 1 and professional baseball experience

An 8,000 sq ft home for the Flock

Weather never cancels development here. Our 8,000 sq ft indoor facility in Cypress has open turf, Hack Attack machines and members get 24-hour access. Players can get extra reps before school, after practice or on a rainy Saturday.

When it's time to get on a field, the JAYS will use local fields within a short drive of the facility, providing more opportunity for practice reps (More info to come soon!).

Strength training led by an Olympian

Most youth programs leave strength training to chance. We put it on site.

Heidi Johnson leads OPA Strength. She was a three-sport NCAA Division I athlete and All-American at Cal State Fullerton, competed in the 2006 Olympics with USA Bobsled & Skeleton, and has coached at the University of Florida, the University of Kentucky and within an MLB organization. For youth players, that means learning to move well, building a base of strength and speed, and staying healthy as they grow.

A pathway from 9U to college

This is what sets the Flock apart. A JAYS youth player doesn't age out; they move up.

  1. Youth teams (9U–14U): fundamentals, baseball IQ and competing the right way.

  2. OPA JAYS high school program: high school teams that play a competitive schedule and train year-round.

  3. JAYS Fall Scout League: an in-house league built to mimic a varsity environment, where college coaches from JUCO, D2, D3 and NAIA programs come to watch (20+ Coaches have attended!).

  4. College: more than 30 JAYS have committed to college programs over the last three years. Recent signees include players headed to Angelina Junior College, East Texas Baptist University, LeTourneau University, Centenary College, Baton Rouge Community College, National Park College and Dordt University.

When your player is 14, the next step is already in place.

Built on culture: ONE PCT BTR

We develop complete ballplayers, not just stat lines. Players learn to be students of the game through team meetings and baseball IQ work, and they learn the values the JAYS have stood for since day one: teamwork, perseverance and sportsmanship.

It's a great day to be a JAY.
